Europe is a paradise for polyglots: so many languages are spoken! Often, several languages coexist within the same country, as in Switzerland for example, where French, German and Italian are spoken. The Statista website has created a map showing which language is the most spoken in each country, once you forget about the official language and English. For example, in France, the most spoken language after French and English is... Spanish! 13% of the population can speak Spanish, which is surely due to the proximity of the country to sunny Spain. Moreover, it is not uncommon for high school students to learn Spanish in addition to English.

In Germany, the most spoken language after the official language and English is... French (14%), just like in Italy (16%). This shows that French is a very useful language to learn and can help when traveling in Europe.

Thanks to the statistics of this map, we also know that the most spoken language in Europe is English at 38%, followed by French and German, almost ex-aequo with 12% and 11%.

Are you surprised by this map? Which languages would you like to learn to travel the world? Do you prefer to learn a new language for your career or to travel?
